Program Title: Addressing Biorisk Management Vulnerabilities, Improving Biosafety Practices, and Strengthening Coordination for Preparedness and Response in Sub-Saharan Africa

GIS is currently implementing a multi-country biosecurity and OH projects in 6 countries in Africa (Kenya, Somalia, Nigeria, DRC, Gabon and Cameroon) that seek to improve the handling, containment and accountability of pathogens classified as high risk.

The main objective is to develop regional networks of expertise, improve multisectoral coordination, and directly strengthen facility-level biorisk management capacity by addressing vulnerabilities and improving practices for preparedness, prevention, and response of potential biological events.

The laboratory component of the project focuses on strengthening ten laboratories from each of the 6 countries. The second part of the project seeks to strengthen the OH approach while investigating and responding to public health events through collaboration with the existing PHEOCs.
